Oak Outbuildings

Oak Framed Outbuildings to Redefine Your Space

Step into your oak-framed outbuilding—a space full of character, designed just for you.

Oak is one of the finest natural materials, often lasting for hundreds of years. An oak building is an investment to last generations, whilst simultaneously adding something special to your everyday routine.

At Timberpride, we combine 30 years experience with time-honoured craftsmanship, making oak outbuildings by hand in our Cotswolds workshop. The use of traditional hand skills, means we’re able to create classic square joints that offer proper rotational strength.

We even know the history of every oaktree we use, supporting woodland management plans to keep British forests thriving for generations.

Oak Framed Outbuildings to Redefine Your Space

Timberpride specialises in bespoke designs, therefore the entire structure, whether it’s an oak framed barn or a garden feature, will be customised to fit your space, style, and budget.

For example, this bespoke garden kitchen, designed to complement a poolside setting, features a striking octagonal oak roof as its centrepiece. This project was a pleasure to make and has now become an iconic part of the property.

Oak Outbuilding Planning Permission

Planning Permission and Building Regulations

We’re here to make the process of gaining planning permission and building regulations simple. At Timberpride, we guide you through the entire process, working closely with planning consultants and structural engineers to ensure your compliance with The Building Regulations 2010.

We’ll also review your permitted development rights, which can allow you to skip full planning permission for certain builds. If approval is required, we can work with planning consultants to keep everything straightforward and stress-free, whether you’re looking to create an oak framed pool house or something simpler like an oak gazebo.

Extras to consider when installing an oak frame with us

What is fixed face glazing?

We glaze our Oak frames using air-dried English oak cover boards to clamp glass in place, forming a weathertight seal by compressing closed cell memory foam between the oak and the glass. The method allows the timber to flex slightly, enabling it to move up to 6mm without causing any bending stress on the glass.

The benefit of this glazing method is the complete coverage of the mortise and tenon joints, shielding them from outside weather conditions.

Case Study: Artisan-Crafted Oak Framed Garage

When we were asked to design an oak framed garage for an AC Cobra, we knew it had to be something special. The project required precise planning to meet strict dimension requirements, ensuring the garage would not only protect the classic car but also provide practical space above.

We crafted a sturdy oak frame that offered secure storage on the ground floor and a functional first-floor area, maximising the use of space. Every detail was carefully considered to create a structure that complemented the property while meeting the client’s specific needs.

Why Choose Timberpride for Oak Outbuildings?

At Timberpride, we believe in quality from start to finish. Our UKCA Marking, Q Mark, and Visual Strength Grading certifications speak to the high standards we uphold. Every piece of timber we use is sourced from sustainably managed British forests, ensuring consistent quality and avoiding delays from overseas shipments.

We take great pride in ensuring nothing goes to waste—any unusable oak is chipped to fuel our biomass boiler, which heats our workshop, office, and kiln. Each frame is made from hand-selected green oak, meeting D30 or D40 grading standards, with D40 representing the top strength grade available in the UK.

We’ve also gone through some of the most common questions on the oak outbuildings we create below.

Many oak garages do not need planning permission, as they fall under permitted development rights. It all depends on factors such as size, location, and how you’re planning to use it.

Don’t worry—we’re here to help figure it out and guide you through the process if you do need approval. Want to dive deeper? Take a look at our blog on planning permission for outbuildings for a simple breakdown of what’s involved.

Oak is naturally durable and resistant to weathering, so it doesn’t require chemical treatments, though raw linseed oil can help to protect it against harsh weather conditions and insect damage.

Over time, it develops a silver-grey patina, which many people find appealing. If you prefer to maintain the natural colour, there are finishes available, such as UV oil. These will require annual sanding, acid washing and re-oiling to maintain the new look however, which is why most people don’t continue with this regime for more than a couple of years.

An oak garage, when built properly, can last for hundreds of years. Oak’s natural strength and resilience make it an ideal material for structures that stand the test of time.
