Oak Framed Barn Conversions

Your New Oak Framed Barn Conversion

Whether converting a barn into a contemporary living space or designing a barn-style house from the ground up, our 30 years of experience at Timberpride ensures that your oak framed barn will be a lasting investment, rich in character and craftsmanship.

Our artisans handcraft every oak frame, using their expertise to make judgements on each beam and ensure accuracy and durability throughout the entire structure. The result is a barn that not only looks stunning but stands strong for generations to come.

With our roots in forestry, we personally consult with our network of foresters who manage the British woodlands we source our oak from. This ensures that every log we use supports sustainable practices and maintains the health of the forest for future generations.

At Timberpride, we maintain a ready stock of British oak logs to mill for beams specifically to support barn conversion projects of all sizes. This ensures we can meet the demands of even the most complex conversions without delay. Our in-house milling capability allows us to control every stage of production, from raw timber to the final oak frame, guaranteeing consistent quality without relying on external suppliers.

Recognised Craftsmanship

Decades of expertise allow our skilled craftsmen to anticipate how each beam will respond and work with its natural strengths. By embracing the unique character of the wood rather than resisting it, we achieve results that are not only structurally sound but rich in authenticity and beauty.

We hold UKCA Marking, Q Mark and Visual Strength Grading for Hardwoods from Exova BM TRADA, ensuring every oak barn conversion meets the highest structural and safety standards.

Extras to consider when installing an oak frame with us

What is fixed face glazing?

We glaze our Oak frames using air-dried English oak cover boards to clamp glass in place, forming a weathertight seal by compressing closed cell memory foam between the oak and the glass. The method allows the timber to flex slightly, enabling it to move up to 6mm without causing any bending stress on the glass.

The benefit of this glazing method is the complete coverage of the internal mortise and tenon joints, shielding them from outside weather conditions.

Planning an Oak Barn Conversion

We have a deep understanding of the construction of oak buildings and are well-versed in permitted development rights related to barn conversions.

We can help to establish whether your project falls within permitted development or requires planning permission. We collaborate with trusted planning consultant partners and structural engineers to ensure your conversion meets all requirements to gain planning permission and building regulations approval.

Oak Barn Conversion Case Study: Rosebank Barn

Rosebank Barn was originally an open lid and legs Dutch barn structure, never designed to support a floor load or provide the insulation needed for residential living. Recognising the challenge, the project’s architect brought in Timberpride as oak specialists.

To strengthen the structure while preserving its open feel, we installed curved cantilever ceiling braces along with hidden steel straps, ensuring long-term stability without compromising the barn’s aesthetic.

The oak chosen for Rosebank Barn has its own remarkable story—200-year-old timber sourced from the Clinton Devon Estate near Bideford, a property dating back to William the Conqueror. Hand-selected and graded by Timberpride, this oak brought both heritage and strength to the project.

This means it is often best to start with a target budget for the build and work back to a frame design. If you already have some concept drawings it is relatively easy to give an indication of cost
