Acclimatising Oak Floors

Acclimatisation and why you should do it!

Solid oak floors can last for several hundred years in the right setting.

The most important factor in this longevity is stability of moisture content.

If the moisture content in the floor board is 10% and the moisture in the room is 12% then the floor will swell (and vice versa). So, a floor board should acclimatise in the room where it is to be laid to reach equilibrium (fancy!) with the room.

Note also, that if the moisture contents fluctuate in the house with the seasons, the floor will expand and contract.
