Many years ago I wandered into Westminster Hall, within seconds I was speechless, staring open mouthed at the Oak roof structure. Beautifully embellished hammer beam trusses which have supported the roof for nearly 600 years. If you want to look up into a vaulted roof in your home and feel that tingle of awe every day we probably ought to talk about Oak roof trusses.
Oak roof trusses come in many forms. It’s not just about holding the roof up!  Feature or cosmetic trusses don’t even do that, they are just for show! 
Oak Roof Structures
A visible vaulted roof is a superb way to enjoy the beauty of your oak framed trusses whilst creating a sound roof that will last for hundreds of years, both an ethical and sustainable choice too. If you are planning to have a room in the attic why not have the full Oak roof structure fully visible so the room is full of interest and character, an attic room can be so much more than just another space to store a back pack you only used once.
Oak Trusses
The truss is the triangular frame forming the roof shape. This can be with a central king post or with supporting curved queen posts or combination of the two. You can have a raised collar, hammer beam, scissor, interrupted tie beam, cruck beam truss the list goes on. The roof structure is a series of trusses required to make the roof together with the purlin runs, braces and ridge beam.
Face fixed glazing is the system used to clamp glass onto the frame using oak cover boards. We have perfected the glazing of oak frames, producing QBA grade oak boards drying them for 18 months before planing and profiling for use as cover boards. The glass is fixed to the face of the frame and held in place with a cover board and sealed. This is a successful tried and tested system of glazing oak frames that ensures there is no water ingress through knots or joints in the beams.
We make opening windows and doors made to fit seamlessly into your frame, pre hung, glazed, oiled and complete with ironmongery. Joinery is made from the same sustainably sourced British Oak, milled and put in stick to air dry for 1 year per inch of thickness and finished in the kiln.

Sustainable Oak Construction
We believe it is our responsibility to make maximum use of every magnificent oak tree that we bring into our yard. Harvesting a tree that was planted by our great-great grandparents generation which has now reached maturity is an honour.
Each saw log is selected for the job, considering length, girth, knots and efficiency. Not only do we produce beams, we take boards form the outside which, grade dependent, are used for cladding, joinery or flooring thereby maximising the yield from what might be a 120 year old tree.
We are proud that nothing is wasted. Only the bark and slabbing boards, pieces too small or rotten knot pockets which can’t be used are chipped to fire our biomass boiler, heating the workshop, office and kiln.
