Oak Sun Room Extension

What is an Oak Sun Room Extension?

An oak sun room extension is a bright, inviting space that transforms your home by bringing the outdoors in.

While oak sun rooms traditionally feature three glass-panelled walls and one solid wall, your design doesn’t have to follow convention. Whether you envision a single glass-panelled wall to let the sunlight pour in or a more elaborate design, we’ll create a space that’s uniquely yours.

Our oak is responsibly sourced from British forests with management plans in place, ensuring a sustainable process from start to finish. Each piece is hand-crafted by our skilled artisans using traditional square joints, giving your oak frame the rigidity and rotational strength to last for hundreds of years.

Oak Garden Room

An oak garden room is a versatile space that can be anything you need it to be—a home office, guest room, or simply a way to maximise the space available on your ground floor.

Whether you envision it as an extension of your home similar to an oak conservatory, or a standalone structure in your garden, we’ll work closely with you to design and build a space that complements your property. With expert craftsmanship at the heart of the process, your oak garden room will become a space you’ll love for years to come.

Oak Orangery

Typically used as a dining space or family room, an oak orangery provides a distinct addition to your property. Originally used for growing fruits and vegetables, orangeries are set apart by their roof lanterns, which add height and natural light to the space.

Whether you prefer a traditional oak framed orangery complete with a roof lantern, a flat roof, or something uniquely your own, we’ll consult with you throughout the process to make sure your orangery perfectly complements your vision.

Do You Need Planning Permission for a Sunroom Extension?

Most sunroom extensions don’t require planning permission, as they fall under permitted development rights. These rights allow certain home improvements without formal approval, as long as they meet specific size and design criteria, such as the extension not covering more than 50% of the land around your house.

At Timberpride, we’re here to take the stress out of the process. We’ll check your permitted development rights and if planning permission is required, we’ll work with trusted consultants to make it as simple as possible. We also work with structural engineers to ensure everything meets the necessary standards for building regulations.

Extras to consider when installing an oak frame with us

What is fixed face glazing?

We glaze our Oak frames using air-dried English oak cover boards to clamp glass in place, forming a weathertight seal by compressing closed cell memory foam between the oak and the glass. The method allows the timber to flex slightly, enabling it to move up to 6mm without causing any bending stress on the glass.

The benefit of this glazing method is the complete coverage of the internal mortise and tenon joints, shielding them from outside weather conditions.

Bespoke roof trusses for your sun room extension

Oak trusses are about more than just supporting the roof. They bring personality and character to your space, with some being purely decorative. Many truss designs and names come from the medieval period, such as:

  • King Post Truss: A single vertical post at the centre of the truss.
  • Queen Post Truss: A pair of curved posts, often accompanying the king post – this is known as a King & Queen post truss.

Other options include raised collar, hammer beam, scissor, or simple A frames, each has its own unique look and feel.

Case Study: Kitchen Extension

When Kevin and Cathy approached us with their initial architects’ drawings for an oak frame extension, they envisioned something with the charm of an old farmhouse, a vaulted roof and a bit of a wow factor.

The finished kitchen exceeded their expectations. The vaulted roof and gable end glazing brought in an abundance of natural light, giving the space an airy, conservatory-like feel. Cathy’s favourite feature is the kitchen window, where she spends hours enjoying the changing seasons and reading—a true highlight of the project.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered some of the most common questions on oak sunrooms below.

The price of an oak extension in the UK depends on the size and style you’re looking for. Features like vaulted ceilings, decorative trusses, or big glazed panels can add to the cost. If your extension needs to connect to your existing home or you’re adding extra details, that can influence the budget too.

How much an oak garden room costs depends on how you plan to use it. A simple garden room will cost less than one with lots of glazing, insulation for year-round use and energy efficiency. If you’re adding electricity, heating, or plumbing, that can also affect the price. It’s worth talking to a professional to explore your options and find a design that’s perfect for your space and budget.

You can build an extension without planning permission if it follows these rules (permitted development rights):

General Rules:

Extensions can’t cover more than 50% of the land around your house.

They should match the look of your house.

You can’t extend beyond the front of your house or a side facing a road.

For Single-Storey Rear Extensions:

These can be up to 3 metres for terraced or semi-detached houses or 4 metres for detached houses.

Bigger extensions (up to 6 metres for terraced/semi-detached and 8 metres for detached) are possible, but you’ll need prior approval through a neighbour consultation.

For Side Extensions:

These can be up to half the width of your original house.

They must not be taller than 4 metres, or the height of the house.
